How to Clean Intimate Products So They Actually Last

The reason most intimate products fail early is not use. It is a cleaning routine that leaves residue in a seam, or a storage spot that never quite dries — and in a climate like the UAE's, the second one matters more than most instructions admit.

Match the method to the material

Everything below assumes you know what your product is made of. If the listing only said "soft material" and nothing else, assume a porous blend and treat it accordingly.

• Silicone — non-porous. Mild unscented soap and warm water handles both surface film and anything water-based left behind.
• ABS — rigid and non-porous. Same approach as silicone, but avoid soaking if there is any seam around a charging port.
• TPE — porous. Clean the surface, dry it completely, and accept that it has a shorter usable life than either of the others.

Before the first use

New products carry mould-release residue and dust from packaging. Run through the full wash — soap, warm water, thorough rinse, full air dry — before anything else happens. It takes two minutes and it is the step people skip most often.

After each session

Wash as soon as it is practical rather than leaving it overnight. Water-based residue dries into a film that takes noticeably more scrubbing to shift once set.

The sequence:

1. Rinse under warm running water to remove loose residue
2. Work a small amount of mild unscented soap over the whole surface, including textured areas
3. Rinse until no slip remains — slippery means soap is still there
4. Shake off excess water, then pat dry with a clean lint-free cloth
5. Air dry completely in open air before it goes anywhere near storage

Skip anything scented. Fragrance leaves its own film and it is the most common cause of irritation that gets blamed on the product instead.

The drying step matters more here

Coastal humidity in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi sits high for much of the year, and closed rooms with air conditioning keep it there. A product put away while even slightly damp stays that way — especially inside a seam, around a charging port, or within deep texture.

That lingering moisture is what degrades soft surfaces and dulls finishes. Leaving products to air dry in a well-ventilated spot for an hour is usually enough. Putting them straight into a closed drawer is not.

Never use a hairdryer on a hot setting; high heat damages soft surfaces faster than leaving them damp does.

Rechargeable versus battery

This distinction decides whether you can submerge a product at all:

• Rechargeable with a sealed body — wipe with a damp cloth, never submerge. Even well-sealed units have weak points around charging contacts.
• Fully waterproof with no exposed contacts — safe to rinse under a tap. Check whether that also covers *full submersion*, which is a separate rating.
• Battery-powered with a removable cover — keep the compartment dry. The thread around a battery cap is usually the first place moisture gets in.

Internal and multi-channel products

Sleeves and multi-channel products need more than a surface rinse. Turn them inside out if the material allows it — most soft sleeves do — then wash the interior, rinse thoroughly, and dry them open rather than folded.
