Water-Based Lubricant: Choosing It and Using It Properly

Lubricant is the cheapest thing most people buy in this category and the one with the largest effect on everything else. Not because of any quality in the formula itself, but because friction changes how every other product behaves.

A product that feels weak at low settings usually does not need more power. It needs less drag.

Why water-based specifically

Water-based lubricant is compatible with everything you are likely to combine it with: silicone products, porous blends, latex condoms, and every material covered in the materials guide. Nothing else offers that.

Silicone-based formulas last longer before reapplication and have a lovely feel — and they destroy silicone surfaces. Repeated contact leaves them tacky, then degrades them further. If any product you own is silicone, the lubricant must be water-based.

Oil-based formulas — anything from a kitchen cupboard included — should never meet latex. They degrade it quickly, which is a real problem rather than a theoretical one.

How to use water-based lubricant

Two or three drops per surface is the starting point. More than that tends to migrate, which wastes product and reduces grip rather than improving it.

It dries faster here than you expect

That is not a defect; it is how the chemistry works. The fix is reapplication, not switching formulas:

• A few drops of water reactivates a film that has started to set — no need for more product
• Keep it within arm's reach rather than across the room

Unopened, most formulas keep well past a year. Once open, both thicker texture and changes in smell mean it is time to replace it.

Building it into a routine

Keeping lubricant accessible rather than buried removes the hesitation that leads to going without, and "going without" is when everything else works worse. It belongs next to the other things you actually reach for.
